The waiting room

Wolstraat, Antwerp — 2026 — In development

Systeem d is waiting for a permit.

Repair to launch was planned as the first presentation on Wolstraat, but part of the project requires a permit. Until a decision is made, it cannot go ahead.

Meanwhile, the space does not remain empty. It becomes The waiting room.

Waiting

The waiting room begins in the interval between application and decision.

The front space of Systeem d is set up as an actual waiting room. Chairs, tables, reading material, lighting and everyday objects sit alongside works and interventions whose status is not always immediately clear.

The space can be used as intended: you can sit and wait. Little else is programmed.

Time counts up

A counter on the window records how long the permit application for Repair to launch has been pending.

It does not count down to a fixed opening date. It records elapsed time:

days / hours / minutes / seconds

The counter runs until a decision is made.

A few doors down

During the same period, there is a temporary tram stop a few houses away on Wolstraat. People wait there too.

The tram stop is not part of the installation, but it becomes part of the situation around The waiting room.

Inside and outside, the same action takes place for different reasons.

Temporary use

The duration of The waiting room is not decided by Systeem d.

The administrative procedure determines when it ends.

When the permit decision arrives, the counter stops and the space changes again.
