Palmen brings together handmade artificial palm trees and paintings of artificial landscapes, interiors, display cases and tropical motifs.

The palms are not scenery. They stand among the paintings and change how the space is read.

Together, the paintings and objects form a temporary environment.

A constructed landscape

The palms are visibly made objects.

They reproduce a familiar image without trying to pass as real. Their artificiality is part of the work: the tropical image is built, placed and moved.

Within Systeem d, they appear among paintings of palms, water, windows, waiting areas, transit zones and artificial environments.

The result is not a row of separate works on a wall, but an environment in which paintings and objects affect one another.

First installation: Systeem d

The first presentation takes place on Wolstraat.

The space is not treated as a neutral backdrop, but as the place where the installation is first tested and put together.

Distances between objects, sightlines and the route through the room become part of the work.

Possible relocation

Afterwards, Palmen may move to a tanning salon.

This is not simply a second venue.

In a tanning salon, images of sun, tropical escape and artificiality are already part of the everyday setting.

The same work is read differently there.

Palmen looks at what happens to an installation when its context changes.
