Fragments was made as a reaction to the conditions surrounding the exhibition itself.
The painting brought together the things that had begun to irritate me within the art context: opinions, rules, hierarchy, designated areas, language and the expectations surrounding presentation.
During the exhibition, the work changed.
After being told, “Don’t forget where it all started,” I added the words:
NOTHING WITHOUT HIM
The sentence turned the painting into a record of the relationship between artist, exhibition space and authority.
Rather than treating the gallery as a neutral container, Fragments made the conditions around the exhibition part of the work.
