HILOW

Antwerp, Belgium

After Caravan, the question shifted from independence from galleries to the hierarchy of context itself.

The project was presented at Lambermontmartre, deliberately using a low-threshold art market as the setting for work concerned with status, labour and cultural value.

The structure of the project was based on oppositions:

low location / high art
low-status professions / highest possible setting

Paintings depicting jobs with little social status were placed within visual references to prestige, ceremony and institutional display.

The project asks what happens to the perceived value of an image when its setting changes — and who determines whether something belongs to a market, a gallery, a museum or somewhere else entirely.
