PROJECT 000 — THE WAITING ROOM

Antwerp, Belgium

The Waiting Room began while Systeem d was waiting for a permit for Repair to Launch.

Until a decision was made, the planned project could not proceed. Rather than leaving the space empty, the period of waiting became the project itself.

The front space of Systeem d was arranged as an actual waiting room. Chairs, tables, reading material, lighting and everyday objects sat alongside works and interventions by different artists.

Visitors could enter, sit and wait.

A counter on the window recorded how long the permit application had been pending.

It did not count down towards an opening date.

It counted elapsed time.

days / hours / minutes / seconds

The duration of the project was therefore not determined by Systeem d, but by the administrative procedure itself.

When the permit decision arrived, the waiting would end and the space would change again.

The people waiting

Visitors were invited to enter, take a number, sit down and wait. Some stayed briefly, others remained longer. Their presence turned the installation into an actual waiting room rather than a representation of one.
